Our Usambara Mountains Hiking 5 Days excursion offers visitors breathtaking unique and wide vistas. This peaceful corner of Northern Tanzania is best experienced on a village to village trek. Explore Tanzania off the beaten track as you come along hillside farms nestled between the mountains and lush green rainforest. You will discover beautiful waterfalls and breathtaking viewpoints along the Usambara Ridge. On clear days even Mt. Kilimanjaro can be seen.

Don’t underestimate the challenge of the Usambara Ridge. Hiking hours per day can be between 7 to 10 hours which makes it an exhausting but rewarding adventure.

Today we will organize your transport to Lushoto town, right next to the Usambara Mountains.

You can arrive from Daressalaam, Moshi or Arusha. On your arrival, you will meet our guide. He will check your equipment to ensure that you are well prepared for your hike.

Overnight will be in Lushoto, where you will have dinner.

Start your hike at 8:30am, departing Lushoto town and going to the royal village Kwembago where the first king of the Sambaa tribe lived. You will then reach the Magamba tropical rainforest. Here you will visit a German trench cave as well as have the opportunity to see black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, birds, many colorful butterflies and Jacksons chameleons. You will enjoy lunch at Magamba viewpoint and then hike to Lukozi where you will overnight.

Following breakfast you will start out at 9am, heading through farms where you can see coffee and banana plantations and experience local village life. Here you have the option of visiting the beautiful Mkuzi Waterfalls. You will have great views of the rolling hills of Lushoto. You will hike to Rangwi sister’s convent to have dinner and overnight.

Start the day hiking through the beautiful Shagayu rainforest. Here you will be able to see the famous Usambara violet flower which was discovered in 1884 by Saint Paul. At 6:30pm you will arrive at Mtae viewpoint to watch the sunset (altitude of 1900m).Approx. Distance: 10km Hiking Time: 5 hours

 

 

Catch an early morning bus from Mtae to Kwesimu village. You will hike from here to Irente farm (abour 1 hour). Enjoy a breakfast with fresh coffee here before heading to Irente viewpoint where you have wonderful views across the sisal plantations and cliff tops. If you still have enough time & energy, you can hike to the beautiful Kwesimu Waterfalls. From here you will head back to Lushoto town, where you will have overnight and a well deserved shower.

Approx. Distance: 5km Hiking Time: 2.5 hours

 

 

After your overnight in Lushoto, you will enjoy a nice breakfast before you can say goodbye to the beautiful Usambara Mountains.

From here we will organize your transfer to Moshi, Arusha or Daressalaam.

Absolutely yes. We will arrange all airport transfers for you from and to the airport so that you don’t have to worry about how to get to your hotel. One of our drivers or guides will come to pick you up and take you back to the airport. This is already included in our offers and services.

A private departure can be arranged at any time according to your individual travel dates for highest flexibility. A group departure has a planned schedule on a specific date and let you share some costs while travelling. So if you are on a budget and want to meet friends from all over the world you can join one of our groups.

Absolutely yes. Our handpicked hotels all offer you to safely store your luggage during your climb. In this way you can leave all gear that you won’t need during your climb at the hotel. That is very convenient if you are planning to go on a safari or to Zanzibar after your hike.

Tanzania Horizon Safaris has worked out a very transparent cancellation policy. In most cases we can offer a voucher if you have  to postpone your travel. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Please note that deposits are non-refundable as they have to be used for making reservations for your hotel and transport.

*If a booking is cancelled the client is subject to a cancellation fee as follows:

  • until 4 weeks prior to departure – 30% Cancellation Fee
  • 4-2 weeks prior to departure – 50% Cancellation Fee
  • 2-1 weeks prior to departure – 75% Cancellation Fee
  • less then 1 week prior to departure – 100% Cancellation Fee: The company reserves the right to cancel any tour at its sole and absolute discretion, without prior notification in instances where this is unavoidable. However, in that case the company agrees to refund all money that has already been paid by the client. This shall be the company’s sole responsibility to the client and no claim for any damages, howsoever arising, shall accrue against the company.
