Today, on your way from Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti, you will visit a remarkable landmark. The Olduiuvai Gorge is considered one of the most important paleoanthropological localities in the world. From the entrance gate you will arrive at an ancient place full of history. The Gorge was discovered after an alkaline lake covering it dried up, due to the forces of the great rift and volcanic activity, exposing ancient human remains and those of extinct animals. In 1959, archaeologist Mary Leakey discovered a skull fragment belonging to an early hominin that her husband, Louis Leakey, named Zinjanthropus boisei but dubbed “Nutcracker Man” because of its huge molars, indicative of a vegetarian diet. Til today, this discovery is one of the oldest traces of modern man. During your visit, you will get impressive insights in our very own history.
