We collected frequently asked questions from our clients for you that might help you to make your decision to find the perfect Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari for you. Please go through our frequently asked questions and don’t hesitate to contact us anytime if you can’t find a suitable answer. We will be happy to assist you!
We recommend the 7 Days Rongai Route, 8 Days Lemosho Route and 9 Days Northern Circuit. These routes offer the best balance of high success rates, beautiful scenery and smaller crowds. 7 day Machame is a nice route as well, but has a lot of other climbers on it.
Avoiding altitude sickness is the key. Do this by walking slowly. Drink lots of water and eat enough food. Go on all optional acclimatization hikes. Consider taking Diamox. Also prevent other illnesses by disinfecting your hands after every time you use the bathroom and before any meals.
USA, Canadian, British and most European citizens can obtain their visas upon arrival at Kilimanjaro National Airport. The cost is $100 for USA passport holders and $50 for others. If you are a citizen of a different country, please check with your embassy whether you can obtain a visa upon arrival. However, we advise to apply for your visa before arrival to avoid any delays at the airport.
It is not mandatory to have an emergency insurance for Kilimanjaro but highly recommended. A valid insurance is necessary for helicopter evacuation and to avoid additional costs in case of an emergency on the mountain.
With a group climb, you will be in a party of up to 15 climbers who have booked with us separately (strangers). Group climbs are scheduled for set dates on set routes. In a private climb, you will be in a party of people you specifically booked with (friends, family, etc.). Private climbs can be scheduled on any date you choose and on any route. There is no maximum number of climbers for a private climb. The service on the mountain is exactly the same.
Differences between private climbs and group climbs on Kilimanjaro
Definitely. It can rain and snow all year round. The base of the mountain is in the rainforest. A quality waterproof jacket and pants is an absolute must.
In general, expect to sleep in temperatures as low as 20F and to hike in temperatures as low as -20F. It can be even colder. Be prepared. Expect it to be very cold and prepare yourself well for the cold nights. A balaclava and a winter hat are very helpful items to keep your head warm at night and protected from dust to sleep comfortable. You will be provided with four season mountain tents but what really keeps you warm is your sleeping bag and your clothes. Be prepared to sleep in your fleece jacket or even winter jacket to stay warm.
We can accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets. For more specific requirements, we will try our best but please contact us to discuss your specific requirements. Our chef will prepare specific meals each day that are adapted to the altitude on the mountain.
We provide wash bins with hot water and soap for you to wash your hands and face in the morning and before going to sleep. That can be done inside your private tent or in our toilet tent where you will be able to stand up. In addition, you can use wet wipes if you like to towel off.
Only the injured/exhausted hiker must descend. The remaining hikers can continue their hike. We bring multiple guides on every climb so that when a climber needs to descend, it does not affect the rest of the party. You will be accompanied by 1 guide and 1-2 porters until you reach your accommodation. In case that it is necessary, we will organize a doctor for check-up at additional costs or transfer you to a nearby hospital. Your safety is our priority.
If needed, additional nights at the accommodation as well as meals are not included and must be seen as extra. However, we will assist you to arrange your accommodation so that you don’t have to worry about it. In the rare case that your accommodation is fully we will organize an alternative accommodation for the additional night(s) at additional costs and transfer your luggage.
