Marangu Route

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola” Route, is the oldest and most established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route that offers sleeping cabins in dormitories instead of camping. There are 60 bunk beds each in Mandara Hut and Kibo Hut and 120 bunk beds in Horombo Hut. Guests will be provided with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required.

The huts have shared dining rooms and basic washrooms, ranging from flush toilets and running water in the lower huts to long toilets and buckets of water in the Kibo hut. Many prefer Marangu because it is considered the easiest trail on the mountain due to its gradual slope and direct path. However, the route’s short time window makes altitude acclimatization quite difficult.

The route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeast. The Marangu route is slightly less scenic and varied than the other routes, as the ascent and descent take place on the same path. For this reason it is also the busiest route. Tanzania Horizon Safaris offers Marangu as a five or six day private climb. The five-day variant does not have an acclimatization day in the Horombo Hut on the third day.
