The Western Breach is considered the hardest and most challenging route to climb Kilimanjaro. But for the few climbers willing to take on the challenge, it opens up its unique beauty and offers aspects of the mountain that no other route can offer. It is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the west and takes you to the volcano’s crater and the Furtwängler Glacier with an overnight stay at Crater Camp.
From the town of Moshi we go by jeep to the Londorossi gate. The route crosses the rainforest and then the Shira Plateau and then follows other routes up to the Lava Tower. After an overnight stay at the Lava Tower, the route leads towards Arrow Glacier Camp through a danger zone that is only passable at night when temperatures are low enough. It is the only route that requires helmets for safety reasons. The Western Breach itself is a boulder field that continues to move. After exiting the danger zone, climbers are rewarded with spectacular views of Mount Meru and a walk along the massive glacier of Kilimanjaro.
Another unique highlight of this route is that it is the only route that allows you to stay overnight at Crater Camp and actually stand on the edge of the heart of the mountain, the Kilimanjaro Crater, before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m .
