Today we set out early, collecting you from your accommodation at 8am and heading west to stunning Tarangire National Park. We arrive at picnic site by noon, in time for a pleasant lunch. Your afternoon game-drive will reveal all the wonders of Tarangire, a National Park often referred to as the ‘Elephant Playground’. Herds of up to 300 of these mighty mammals are sometimes seen in the park.

Serengeti may be better known, but Tarangire in the dry season easily rivals it for animal densities. As well as the herds of elephant Tarangire is home to buffalo, lion, wildebeest, zebra and gazelle while gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx are ‘local specialties’. Lake Burungi’s marshy shores are the lure for these mammals and the waters attract many beautiful bird species, too. Look out for giant kingfishers, hoopoes and the delightfully-named white-bellied go-away bird. Tarangire is noted for its splendid baobab trees, rolling savannah and acacia woodland. At the end of an inspiring afternoon amongst the wildlife, we retire to the Lodge for an evening meal and some rest.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Picnic lunch box and Dinner
Journey time and Distance: 3 hours, from Moshi to Tarangire National Park

On our way from Tarangire to Ngorongoro Crater, we will go on a half-day safari at Lake Manyara National Park.

Lake Manyara National Park

This national park is located in the northern part of Tanzania, 126 kilometers west of Arusha Town. The park has a size of 330 square kilometers, of which 220 square kilometers make up the lake when the water level is high in the rainy season. The area is best known for the large herds of elephants and the tree-climbing lions, who escape the heat by climbing trees to await their prey.

Lake Manyara National Park is a unique and special place for several reasons:

  1. Biodiversity: The park is known for its incredible biodiversity, with over 330 species of birds, as well as a variety of mammals, including elephants, baboons, monkeys, and lions.
  2. Tree-Climbing Lions: Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, which are one of the park’s biggest attractions. These lions are known to climb trees to escape the heat and to take a break from the ground, making for a unique and unusual sight.
  3. Scenic Beauty: The park is situated on the edge of the Rift Valley and is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including the lake itself and the towering escarpment that rises from its shores. This combination of water, forests, and open savannah provides a beautiful and diverse environment for visitors to enjoy.
  4. Unique Flora and Fauna: Lake Manyara is home to a variety of unique flora and fauna that can only be found in this part of Tanzania. This includes a large variety of bird species, as well as the park’s famous baobab trees and the hot springs that are located within its borders.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Picnic lunch box and Dinner
Journey time and Distance: 2 hours from Tarangire to Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater Rim Walk (optional)

Today, before sunrise, we set out on foot along the rim of the crater. Together with our guide we hike for some time until the Ngorongoro Crater is in front of us at sunrise. We can watch the animals as they migrate over the crater rim towards the waterholes in the crater at daybreak. You can’t get any closer to nature in Tanzania before we head back to the camp.

Ngorongoro Crater Safari

Ngorongoro is a crater in Tanzania on the edge of the Serengeti. It was formed when a volcano collapsed at this point. The crater floor is at about 1700 m and the side walls are between 400 and 600 meters high, so that the crater rim is at about 2300 m. The diameter of the crater is about 20 kilometers.

About 25.000 wild animals populate the crater. It also offers the highest density of predators in Africa. The number of zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, antelopes and gazelles is particularly large. They are hunted by lions, hyenas and leopards. There are also elephants in the crater and, unusually in this area, hippos. Between 10 and 15 endangered black rhinos remain. The great herd migration in the Serengeti also passes through the Ngorongoro Crater.

Highlights of the Ngorongoro Crater

  • 25.000 animals
  • see the black rhinos
  • see lions and predators hunting

Today may be ‘departure day’, but there will be plenty of time to enjoy another true spectacle, before your thoughts turn to home. Ngorongoro Crater is often referred to as a wonder of the world and your early morning game drive shows you why.

First, there’s the volcanic caldera (the world’s largest), full of grassland, forest and swamp, a setting of jaw-dropping beauty. Secondly, the permanent water of the crater floor supports a resident population of more than 25,000 large mammals. Here you’ll find many of the reasons you chose to come on safari: elephant, lion, leopard, hyena, jackal, wallowing hippo, waterbuck, baboons… even the rare black rhino finds shelter here.

Sharing this awesome space with the animals are the Maasai, grazing their cattle in an area which has been a separate conservation area since 1956 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. This harmonious co-habitation of man and beast makes Ngorongoro unique in Tanzania and your driver guide will be pleased to explain this incredible co-existence to you.

After your early morning game drive, we have our picnic lunch in the crater before we return to the airport for your flight home. You will drive for 5 hours from Ngorongoro Crater floor to Kilimanjaro International Airport, Read Departure Instructions below
