Diving with Whale Sharks at Mafia Island
Diving with Whale Sharks at Mafia Island
Mafia island is very raw, calm and natural. It is located south of Zanzibar and is perfect for relaxation. The island is accessible by small planes from Dar-es-Salaam, a 30 minutes flight, or by boat to the port of Mafia which takes app. 4hrs. Here you can swim with whale sharks and you may even spot humpback whales. Whale sharks are the largest sharks and the largest of all sea creatures. They can grow up to 21.5 tons in weight and to a length of 12 meters. Did you know they have about 3000 small teeth which are less than 1 inch long? This helps them to eat small shrimp and fish. However, they do not bite or chew. They filter plankton through their gills for nourishment and can stretch their mouths over 1 meter wide. Due to the high demand for this giant´s energy, they migrate for very long distances for nutrition. They are slow swimmers, quite gentle, and have a 70 to 100 years lifespan.
One of the many activities you will do on mafia island is swimming with the whale sharks. They are very huge yet so gentle. This could be your most unforgettable experience on this trip. You can go snorkeling in a very protected marine park where you will see eels, turtles, and octopuses. There is a beautiful lagoon where you can spend your afternoon cooling down and visit a place with some island hippos as well. On your request, a sunset cruise and BBQ can be arranged. For bird watchers, there is a perfect place for you to spend your afternoon and you can be lucky to witness a turtle hatch while at it. In case you are wondering what foods people eat there, you’re lucky because there’s a nice calm street where you can sample the organic local foods.
